There may be days when the sun forgets to keep his appointment with earth; but there is one event that will never be late daily rise in the price of oil! While one may like to lace this quotidian event with a bit of intended humor, things are not funny when the price of oil has climbed 200% in less than a year.

So, what is the way out? To those of us for whom life is unthinkable without a daily fill of petrol or diesel, there has to be some way out of this misery. You and I have no control over the prices of oil; we can at least try to save a few drops at each individuals end. The difference these drops may make on our pocket may not help us build for posterity; but in these difficult days, they certainly can make a difference not only on us, but on the exchequer as well.

These may not be earth-shaking, revolutionary tips; nor am I about to announce a radical new replacement for this fuel. You may have heard enough of what I am about to tell; but they are worth a reiteration nevertheless.

Common sense all round

Since I have already told you that I cannot tackle the root of the problem; that is, I neither have control over the price rise; not do I have a viable alternative to this precious, albeit scarce resource, there is one thing I can do at my end be prudent in using oil. I can sense that familiar when I say this. How many times have people not shouted from rooftops about this virtue? You may have heard this, but please read on by what I mean by this term.

Prudence is not limited to just one aspect of moderation; it encompasses a range of traits. In our haste to lead our lives, has not it occurred to you that we in the industrialized world seem to have forgotten that God has given us an important part our legs? It is nothing but sheer laziness that makes us reach for the car key, almost as an involuntary action, whenever the thought of leaving the house crosses our minds. If we need to go a grocery store a couple of miles away, just why take the car? If you could take a cool walk with the family, not only is the bonding increased; we could have found a magical cure for our ills! That is certain to lead to a secondary effect that of savings on health care.

And try to use your car like a public transport system. Try to take it out only when it is fully loaded. Suppose you want to go to your bank, and your kids have to visit the mall, try to combine these trips into one, instead of making two batches and two cars. This would mean fewer trips for each individual.

Have you ever thought of a holiday for your car? When we look forward to the weekend for a well deserved rest after a weeks slog, should our car not have the privilege, too? Try to rest it for at least one day in a week. This would mean a lot for your purse as well as for the car.

Time to change driving habits

Now, let us talk about the savings you can make in the actual usage of the car. Some small changes in your driving habits can make a big difference.

First, treat your car as a car, and not as a sports bike. You do not have to prove a point to anyone by refusing to take your foot off the accelerator pedal. If have taken a bet in this regard, I can tell you it is not worth it. A moment’s thrill may cost your car a lot. Nor are we advocating that you reach office late. Just start early –this is the simple remedy.

Hybrids are a good alternative. But let me tell you something they are good gas savers, but only if you are neat with your driving habits. Even a hybrid can guzzle gas if you are in the perpetual habit of driving recklessly. So, no matter which kind of car you use, make sure the more important gas saving factor is you, rather than the car itself.

Idling is bad for the car as much as it is for us. When you have even a minute or so left till your turn comes, just switch the engine off. What effort is going to be wasted in turning the ignition on every few minutes?

Check your tire pressure regularly. When the car is running on low tire pressure, it is likely to consume more gas because the vehicle would have to strain itself in running with less air.

Cruise control is another effective method of saving gas. This ensures optimal usage of the engine, and ensures a more even, smoother and economical ride.

Drop in the ocean

There are lots more such tips one can think of. You might have come across a lot more yourself. But these are important to keep in mind when you take your car out (or decide to keep it at home, as I so sagely advised!)

A drop here and there goes a long way in making this a substantial, if not drastic difference. So, imagine the difference if every owner of a car and I do not need to be a genius to tell you that there are millions of cars nationwide were to follow these tips. Have not heard the age old saying that little drops of water (or should we say oil!) a mighty ocean make?
