How to Clean a Car’s Interior During Covid-19?

cleaning car interior for covid-19

Would you like to clean a car or truck interior plastic and fabric for the novel Coronavirus, without damaging its surfaces?

We’ve all come to know that hand-washing and disinfecting common surfaces are the most effective ways to prevent the community spread of the novel Coronavirus. Regarding this, the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the most respected health officials in the world are of one mind. Cleaning saves lives.

This is even more true if you know that someone with symptoms of the illness has been in contact with your car. Cars and trucks possess many high-touch elements. This includes the steering wheel, door handle, and shift lever to name a few of the many. In this situation, immediate disinfection can mean all the difference. Moreover, if you frequently carry various passengers, cleaning these high-touch surfaces is crucial.

That said, how should one clean all those surfaces without causing damage?

What Not to Do?

For starters, there are specific substances to be avoided at all costs. Both hydrogen peroxide and bleach, for example, can damage your upholstery. Additionally, any cleaners with an ammonia base should be avoided. These can damage touch screens by removing their anti-fingerprint and anti-glare coatings. Moreover, avoid anything abrasive when disinfecting a touchscreen device. This includes paper towels or tissues. Lastly, don’t treat all surfaces the same.

What You Should Do When Cleaning for Coronavirus?

Gloves

Most importantly, use gloves if cleaning and disinfecting your car. The CDC specifically suggests the following:

“Gloves and any other disposable PPE used for cleaning and disinfecting the vehicle should be removed and disposed of after cleaning; wash hands immediately after removal of gloves and PPE with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.”cdc.gov

Apply Alcohol-Based Cleaners

The CDC recommends cleaning with alcohol solutions of at least 70% alcohol is most effective. Not only does Alcohol kill Covid-19, but it is friendly to most vehicle surfaces. Just keep it away from the leather. Most leather has a protective layer, but unless you know the manufacturer’s specifications, it’s much better off to be safe than sorry.

Just Soap and Water

Another versatile solution which works on many surfaces, including your leather, is a basic mix of soap and water. Just be sure not to scrub too aggressively, or get the interior fabrics too damp.

Microfiber Towels or 100% Cotton T-Shirts

In general, microfiber towels and/or old cotton t-shirts are a useful solution that can be used just about anywhere.

A Word About Leather Surfaces

Notwithstanding that we’ve mentioned leather more than a few times above, it’s worth repeating. Avoid hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, bleach, and ammonia-based cleaners. Leather disinfecting wipes are best, but a damp cloth with soap and water will likely do the trick.

Stopping Covid-19

Certainly, the most effective solution to stop the community spread of Coronavirus is to simply stay home and not share your vehicle. If you must, however, share a car, drive a rental, get your car serviced, or transport others, then regular cleaning and disinfecting is the most effective method to keep yourself and others safe.

Professional Detailing

Certainly, if you’re truly concerned, a professional detailing or cleaning will be the most thorough solution. Contact our service department for a full list of cleaning services currently available.
