Bob Howard Acura invites you to understand what the symptoms of bad gas are.
The most common symptom of faulty gas caps is likely a gas cap that is loose or a gas cap that will not completely tighten. This may not seem significant at first, but without an air-tight seal, the fuel system can be contaminated with grime and dirt. If your gas cap is not sealing properly, try checking the seal to be sure it’s not missing or brittle. If you have an old car, make sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both can contribute to the gas cap issues and might even require purchasing a replacement from the original manufacturer.
What problems can a loose gas cap cause, well a check engine light? An ill-fitting gas cap will not only let in dirt and grime, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape. These gasoline vapors can produce an error in the emissions system, which could cause the check engine light to come on. Dirt and Grime that gets into the gas tank can also contaminate the injectors over time. Perhaps the biggest indicator of a bad gas cap is the smell of gasoline in your car.
If your car, truck, or SUV wasn’t constructed with a capless gas tank, it’s not recommended that you drive without a gas cap installed. If your car is older, there is a possibility that fuel could slosh out from the gas tank during hard corners or other spirited driving. If you drive without a gas cap, it can lead to diminished gas mileage because the fuel may evaporate without the correct seal on the gas tank. The gasoline smell is the fuel evaporating from the gas tank, which can cause reduced fuel efficiency.
If you’ve already checked out the gas cap, the problems you are having may be caused by bad fuel. If the car, truck, or SUV has problems starting, will not accelerate, or just is not running smoothly, then it’s possible you just have a bad tank of gas.
If your vehicle doesn’t feel normal and you aren’t sure if it’s bad fuel or a bad gas cap, bring it in, and our knowledgeable service technicians will figure out the issue and fix the problem.
